'Mr. Robot' season 2 release date, spoilers news: New trailer revealed, premiere set for July 13
Hit television series "Mr. Robot" returns to the small screen for its sophomore run on July 13, and a new intense trailer has been released by the network.
The Golden-Globe winning series follows the life of Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), a young cybersecurity expert who eventually gets involved in "fsociety," an underground group of hackers after he was recruited by the group's mysterious leader (Christian Slater).
"Mr. Robot" season 2 will pick up on the events after the group hacked Evil Corp, a multinational company along with the illusion of control. In an interview with Digital Trends, showrunner Sam Esmail has teased of what's to come once the show returns. "Season two gets really dark, really fast," he said. "It's even darker [than season one]. We're still nervous with every episode. We're afraid people are going to hate it and call us out as frauds, or whatever. But we definitely love the attention."
Esmail also shared some details on how the plot for season 2 will take shape, saying, "Now that Elliot is aware [of the truth about Mr. Robot], that has opened the door. We're literally externalizing Elliot's mentality and his inner conflict, Mr. Robot being the other half of Elliot," Esmail says. "In the first season, because Elliot wasn't aware, there was a mystery about who Mr. Robot was and what his real motivations were. Now we know, so what does that mean? What does Elliot really want?"
New faces will join the cast: Grace Gummer, Craig Robinson, Joey Badass, further expanding Elliot's world even more. More details about Portia Doubleday's and Carly Chaikin's characters will also be tackled next season.
The show's freshman run garnered a lot of praise from viewers and critics due to its unique storyline and great actors. "Mr. Robot" won two Golden Globe awards this year: Best Television Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor for Slater as the series' main antagonist.
