'NCIS' season 14 air date, plot spoilers news: Ducky's past to be explored? What to expect in season 14

Wilmer Valderrama will play as Special Agent Nick Torres in "NCIS" season 14 | CBS

The long wait is finally over. "NCIS" season 14 is finally premiering on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and with it brings big changes that are expected to inject new energy into CBS' flagship procedural drama.

As fans and viewers of the show know, Michael Weatherly, who played Special Agent Tony DiNozzo the past 13 seasons, will no longer be part of "NCIS." In his stead are two new cast members who are expected to breathe new life into the show.

Wilmer Valderrama ("That '70s Show"), Jennifer Esposito ("Blue Bloods"), and Duane Henry have been cast to play Special Agent Nick Torres, Special Agent Alex Quinn, and MI6 Officer Clayton Reeves respectively. Torres is a deep-cover agent who's brought back to the fold after spending so many years assuming different identities in order to work cases. He is so off-the-grid that some NCIS agents don't know he exists.

Quinn, on the other hand, is Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) contemporary who had to leave fieldwork after "something significant happened" to her, as per showrunner Gary Glasberg's interview with TV Guide. She's now working as an instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center but was recruited by Gibbs as DiNozzo's replacement.

Reeves was introduced in season 13 but was promoted series regular before production for "NCIS" season 14 started. He is on loan from MI6, making his character's assimilation to the team much like that of Ziva Davis (Cote de Pablo), who was on loan from Mossad to NCIS.

Meanwhile, the season 14 premiere will find Gibbs with a new roommate when FBI Special Agent Tobias C. Fornell (Joe Spano) rooms in with him as he recuperates from a gunshot wound.

In an interview with TV Line, Glasberg shared, "Be prepared, because it's some wonderful, light, funny stuff."

"NCIS" season 14 will also see Reeves and Abby (Pauley Perrette) continuing the friendship they started last season. Whether it blossoms into something else remains to be seen. In addition, Ducky (David McCallum) will be featured in his own arc that connects to his past with Adam Campbell playing the young Ducky in flashbacks.

"NCIS" season 14 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.
