New Amazing 'Spider-Man' Movie Release Date News: What Version of Wall-Crawling Superhero Will Fans See Next?

SONY/MARVEL

The partnership between Sony and Marvel on future Spider-Man movies has lit up the Internet with fireworks of excitement and enthusiasm.

While most fans celebrate the return of the wall-crawling superhero to its Marvel spiritual home, some have raised questions on how the new arrangement will affect Spidey.

"The most obvious question, and one already asked many times on social media, is what Spider-Man we'll see on the big screen next?" The Hollywood Reporter's Graeme McMillan asked.

"Not which actor will play the wall-crawling hero, but whether it'll be the original Peter Parker Spider-Man, or the more recent Miles Morales version," McMillan added.

It is possible, the Hollywood Reporter said, for fans to see the new Spider-Man breaking from the traditional white norm of Peter Parker as portrayed by Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield given the groundswell of support that met the 2010 campaign to get Donald Glover to play Spider-Man.

Another question is how much of the Marvel Universe will Sony be able to use.

These are just two of several questions being swirled around by fans online.

Whatever the new direction is, one thing is for certain: As part of the Marvel revamp the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film before releasing a new movie on July 28, 2017.

"The companies are not revealing details, but that movie is likely to be 'Captain America: Civil War,' as Spidey was a major player in the comic's storyline. Andrew Garfield is not expected to reprise the role," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Marvel's Kevin Feige will join Amy Pascal as a producer on the new movie to collaborate on a new creative direction for the web-slinger while Ari Arad and Matt Tolmach, who were producers on the previous movie, will now be the executive producers.

There is also talk of looking for ways to integrate characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or M.C.U., as the Marvel movies are known, into future Spider-Man films, T.H.R. reported.

"The move is a major team-up for two rival studios. Spider-Man has been Sony's most lucrative franchise, but the most recent installment, 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' disappointed. Disney's Marvel, on the other hand, has had unprecedented success with its hero films," it said.

Feige clarified that Marvel's involvement will deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the Marvel Cosmic Universe.

"I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the M.C.U., something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years," Feige said

"This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans," said Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and C.E.O. Michael Lynton.

The Spider-Man pact is already having a ripple effect on the Marvel slate, with four titles getting new release dates.

"Thor: Ragnarok" has been moved to Nov. 3, 2017, from its earlier July 28, 2017 play date. "Black Panther" will now open July 6, 2018, moving from Nov. 3, 2017. "Captain Marvel" moved to Nov. 2, 2018, from July 6, 2018, while "Inhumans" is slotted for July 12, 2019, from its original Nov. 2, 2018 play date.
