According to the synopsis for episode 13 titled "Dragonfly in Amber," the story kicks off with a flash forward to 1968. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is on a journey to Scotland along with her 20-year-old daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) to attend Reverend Wakefield's funeral. There they meet his adopted son, Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin).

Roger's father is an Inverness historian whom Claire and Jamie (Sam Heughan) met when they were on their honeymoon. Claire pays a visit to Culloden Moor and Lallybroch to finally put everything behind her, while Roger and Brianna spend time together researching the Randall family history. Claire eventually reveals the truth behind her time travel to Brianna, telling the story of her life back in 1700s Scotland and Brianna's lineage.

The story later on cuts through and takes viewers back in the 18th century, particularly on the day of the Battle of Culloden. After Jaime fails to stop The Prince from killing the Highlanders, he and Claire makes up a dangerous plot. Jaime's uncle Dougal (Graham McTavish) overhears them, and they have a heated confrontation about their plans. In the end, Jaime is compelled to do anything that he can to save the lives of his loved ones, even if it means saying goodbye to each and every one of them. Claire and Jaime must come up with a tearful decision for their future, but before parting ways, they renew their love at Craigh na Dun.
