'Pretty Little Liars' Season 7 finale plot recap: Marlene King's take on series' shocking summer finale

Will Spencer live through her ordeal when "Pretty Little Liars" season 7B returns this April? | Freeform

A gruesome death, romantic reunions, shocking revelations and two lives hanging in the balance capped the first half of "Pretty Little Liars" season 7.

One day after the summer finale of the show, executive producer I. Marlene King held a conference with reporters to talk about the finale and what else is in store for fans of the series when it comes back in April for the last half of season 7. Incidentally, season 7B will also be the prelude to the series' finale.

King was asked about one of the biggest shockers played out during the summer finale when Mary Drake (Andrea Parker) was revealed as Spencer Hastings' (Troian Bellisario) biological mother. Deadline reports that as per King, the revelation sets the tone for Spencer's emotional story when "Pretty Little Liars" season 7B comes back in April.

"That's a huge revelation not just for Spencer but for the pretty litter liars and for the storyline," the showrunner said. "It's a driving engine of Spencer's emotional story as we come back next April."

Now that fans and viewers know Spencer and Charlotte a.k.a. CeCe Drake (Vanessa Ray) are siblings, do they share the same father? If not, who is Spencer's father? According to King, these and more questions will be resolved before the series ends for good.

The revelation came as Spencer hung for dear life after getting shot by a vengeful Jenna Marshall (Tammin Sursok). King didn't say whether Spencer will live through the ordeal or if she will no longer be part of season 7B, but speaking to E! News, she did tease that the final 10 episodes of the series will focus on Spencer's backstory, as well as how she ended in the Hastings' home.

"Pretty Little Liars" season 7B will also tackle Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) pregnancy and its effect on Emily (Shay Mitchell). Apparently, the love triangle between the two and Paige (Lindsey Shaw) isn't over yet. King says, "Paige is not gone for good... having that triangle play out felt appropriate for us as storytellers."

While being careful not to reveal much about Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra's (Ian Harding) upcoming wedding, King teased "there will be more than one wedding" in 7B. It remains to be seen how Aria and Ezra's love story will pan out after Ezra was seen rushing to his ex upon learning she's still alive.

King likewise said the final episode of "Pretty Little Liars" will be "treated as a two-hour movie" while not discounting the possibility of a movie adaptation of the series.

"Pretty Little Liars" season 7B will return on Freeform in April.
