'Sleepy Hollow' season 4 spoilers, plot news: 'True Blood' alum is Diana, Ichabod's new partner

Abbie Mills' death during the final moments of "Sleepy Hollow" season 3 finale came as a shock to its loyal viewers. Now that a new female series regular has been cast to fill in for the void, fans are wary that the series would never be the same.

If it were up to the fans, they would rather have the series end at season 3. However, Fox has picked the series up for another season, which was why a new female lead had to be cast after Nicole Beharie's exit.

TV Line has confirmed that Ichabod Crane's (Tom Mison) new partner and witness would be Diana, who will be played by "True Blood" alum Janina Gavankar. She is expected to fill the void left by Detective Abbie Mills' (Beharie) death, but she and Ichabod would apparently venture to occasional clashes.

As per the publication's description of the character, she would have a supernatural skeptic nature and a different manner of handling her missions with Ichabod; thus, the two would not see eye-to-eye. Diana is an ex-military officer but is now working as a Special Agent for Homeland Security.

A born leader, she is described as having a tough personality but a soft side that Ichabod would grow to admire. She has an 11-year-old daughter, Stella, her daughter with someone she lost in the line of duty. It appears that despite their clashes in the early goings of "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, they would eventually be drawn closer by their losses.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abbie's death was just one of the things that make a series such as "Sleepy Hollow" thrive.

"The finale featuring the tragic death of Abbie Mills was a very dramatic ending and a bold move for the show. Sleepy Hollow has always been known for its shocking finales," said Clifton Campbell, the show's new showrunner.

Season 4 almost didn't happen, as the series faced tough issues prior to its renewal.There was Beharie's departure, which has been speculated on for quite some time since the actress has been vocal about her desire to leave the show. Then there was the entry of a new showrunner (Campbell), and the change in location from North Carolina to Atlanta in order to maximize tax rebates.

The series has weathered the storm through the years because of Ichabod and Abbie's dynamics, but with Beharie's exit, it would be worth noting if Gavankar and Mison's partnership would produce sparks.

"Sleepy Hollow" season 4 is returning to Fox midseason of 2017 and is expected to feature supernatural creatures and a closer look into the lives of the Witnesses.
