It looks like there will be a new hero on the block when "Supergirl" season 2 returns with new episodes to the small screen next year.

Fans will welcome the new year with the girl of steel (Melissa Benoist) with an episode directed by Kevin Smith. The installment in question is titled "Supergirl Lives."

The promo for the "Supergirl" season 2 midseason opener teases that Mon-El (Chris Wood) joining the field with Alex (Chyler Leigh) giving him a pep talk about how fear is natural especially when starting out.

It's about time for the Daxamite to suit up. After all, Winn (Jeremy Jordan) and James (Mehcad Brooks) are already in the crime-fighting business.

Since this "Supergirl" season 2 episode will be directed by Smith, whose helming work on "The Flash" was highly acclaimed, fans can expect nods to his "Superman Lives" script from almost two decades ago.

One of the most notable moments in service of this as seen in the trailer is the red sun (or the sun being blocked out), which renders Supergirl powerless.

Another takeaway from the trailer is the return of Roulette (Dichen Lachman), who fans last saw organizing underground alien fight club for the elites. It will be interesting to see what she is up to this time.

Meanwhile, those who are deeply missing Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) from "Supergirl" season 2 might be in for a bad news.

According to TV Line, the actress is not set for a return this season although there are plans for a comeback in spring. There are no details about how that will happen yet.

Nevertheless, many look forward to seeing Kara's former boss and mentor once more, including executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, who said that "Supergirl wouldn't be Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant."

"Supergirl" season 2 will be back on Monday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
