'The Elder Scrolls 6' update: no sign of the much-anticipated Bethesda title rolling out this year

"The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" gameplay still | Bethesda

"The Elder Scrolls" fandom may have had a huge 2016 with the release of "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim — Special Edition," which is a remaster for PlayStation 4 (PS4), Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. That being said, a lot of gamers are still looking forward to what comes next after the recent iteration of the game.

For a couple of months, there was a back-and-forth motion in terms of the presumed development for the tipped "The Elder Scrolls VI." Earlier last year, Bethesda stated that the team behind the game has not even started the developmental process for the open-world game. And with a slew of other properties to give attention to — despite some of them arguably lesser known — fans were understandable of the longer production the follow-up may take.

Despite the lack of update, Bethesda never really slammed the door on the thought of "The Elder Scrolls VI." They simply just could not commit to a timeline right now. Admittedly so, Bethesda vice president Pete Hines has been adamant about not giving out regular updates for the game during production. Instead, their marketing machine will only work once release date is already near.

"You're not going to be hearing first details on ['Elder Scrolls 6'] years before the game comes out, absolutely not," Hines told PC Gamer summer of last year. "It's not the next thing we're doing nor the thing we're even doing after that."

This seems to still be the case as his December tweet regarding the content they are working on in the pipeline puts "The Elder Scrolls VI" in the third spot not just in terms of release but for proper development as well. Presumably, one of those two preceding titles is the already announced "Fallout 4 VR," which could also take a bit of time in the labs. In effect, this could hopefully put everything into perspective in terms of around what time the much-clamored follow-up title might hit the shelves.

For those who are getting too impatient for "The Elder Scrolls VI," "Skyrim" is scheduled to be available for the upcoming hybrid console, Nintendo Switch, making it the first "Elder Scrolls" game coming to a Nintendo platform.
