Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) shippers are hoping to see the two reunite and it appears that Stefan (Paul Wesley) will make that happen in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Julie Plec teased that the new season will see the younger Salvatore go out of his way to make sure his brother goes back to normal.

Fans will recall that Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) will be murdering everyone for fun in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 as a result of their contact with the Armory vault.

"Whatever is going on with Damon, he's under some sort of control or is in some situation that he can't entirely get out of," Plec said.

"[Stefan is] very focused on trying to rescue his brother from this mess, understanding that the fallout of whatever it is that Damon has to do could impact his ability to be reunited with Elena one day," the EP added.

Plec in no way said that Elena and Damon will reunite in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 (Dobrev's return is still up in the air, but it appears that this is what Stefan hopes to happen.

Interestingly, this is not a case for Somerhalder himself. During a chat with TVLine, he said that Elena and Damon are better off separated.

"This poor young girl from this tiny town ... she lost everyone she's ever loved, she burned her house down, she's now in a box," the actor said, summing up Elena's situation moving towards "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.

"These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them," the actor added, suggesting that a Delena reunion should not happen.

Of course, it is too early to speculate especially with Dobrev coming back as Elena still unconfirmed. She was in negotiations about it, but no update about that has been provided.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premiere Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
