'Young Han Solo' movie release date, latest news: Will have an appearance from young Lando Calrissian

The "Young Han Solo" movie is still years away from premiering in theaters, but reports have been coming out that the movie will feature Han's other smuggler friend, Lando Calrissian.

The frontrunner for the role of young Lando is reportedly none other than "Community's" Donald Glover. Glover has a pretty strong fanbase behind him, and it seems, casting him as one of the galaxy's smoothest gamblers might be the right choice for Lucasfilm.

Back in his "Community" days, fans were petitioning for Glover to star as Miles Morales a.k.a. the new Spider-Man from the comics. The movement was so popular that Glover got a role in Sony's upcoming "Spider-man: Homecoming" movie. However, it has not been confirmed if he will play Morales.

The role of Lando Calrissian was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." After Han Solo (Harrison Ford) was frozen in carbonite, Lando took his place as the temporary captain of the Falcon and even piloted the ship during the assault on the second Death Star over Endor.

In the expanded "Star Wars" universe, Lando even owned the Millennium Falcon before Han was able to swindle it off of him over a game of cards. It would only make sense for a young Lando to make an appearance in the movie, heck, even be one of the main roles.

Alden Ehrenreich, who was recently cast as the new Han Solo, was the first actor to ever audition for the role, and he was the directors' first pick to play Han (despite auditioning thousands of young actors). Depending on how well the audition goes — or if Glover is even interested in the role — Lucasfilm may have just found the perfect guy for young Lando.

The "Young Han Solo" movie is set to come out in 2018.
