Afroman Arrested News: Punches Female Fan Onstage; Tour Cancelled
In a bizarre incident, rapper Afroman punched a woman on stage after he allegedly mistook her for a male heckler while performing in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old singer was subsequently arrested and his show stopped. Following the incident, other scheduled events of his concert tour were cancelled.
Footage from the show revealed that Afroman – whose real name is Joseph Edgar Foreman – knew beforehand that an unknown fan was sharing the stage with him. When he started performing, the fan continued to dance behind him. He suddenly turned around and punched her in the face.
Afroman then continued with the performance while the woman lay on the stage bleeding and crying. Cops then arrived, stopped the performance and arrested the rap artist who became popular after his hit single "Because I Got High" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002. Soon after, a video of him hitting the woman surfaced on TMZ. Three out of seven venues who were due to host the rapper cancelled his concerts. Ziggy's By the Sea, one of the venues, said it did not encourage such violent behavior from its guests.
After his arrest and release on a $330 bond, Afroman said he thought a male fan who had been heckling him previously had gone on stage and was poking fun at him from behind. He also apologized and said, "I need some help. I'm going to find a foundation."
The New York Daily News said based from his statement, it appeared Afroman was not accepting full blame for the incident. He also appeared to blame the lack of security at the venue, saying they should have escorted the woman from the stage.
Following the incident, a representative of Afroman informed Billboard that it was an "involuntary reflex action" on the part of the artist.
This incident was just the latest in a string of unsavory encounters the rapper has had with his fans. In December last year, Afroman ended up tossing a man off the stage when he went up to dance.
