"Agent Carter" season 3 may have been left out by ABC but the story of Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is far from over, if a new rumor is any indication.

According to Exstreamist News, Marvel and Netflix are trying to make the "Agent Carter" transfer work and that "there are definitely some phone calls being made" and the two parties are exploring their existing partnership.

As fans would know, Netflix is home to various successful Marvel comic book adaptations. There are so many of them that the streaming company is establishing a sprawling Marvel small screen universe.

The acclaimed "Daredevil" series is expected to get a third season. The show starring Charlie Cox gave birth to a "Punisher" spinoff and Jon Bernthal is reprising the titular character. "Jessica Jones" season 2 is also in the works.

"Luke Cage" starring Mike Colter will premiere this year while "Iron Fist" with Finn Jones is also in the pipeline. All four characters will come together for the highly-anticipated "Defenders" mini-series.

"Agent Carter" season 3 will feel right at home, after a few tweaks of course. Exstreamist News says that the show will be a bit different in feel and format so that it fits just right in with the universe.

Fans also want to see Agent Carter's story to continue on Netflix. A petition for the company to pick up the show for season 3 is still out there and is closing in on 112,000 signatures, dangerously close to its 150,000 goal. This will certainly be an opportunity for Netflix to rake in new subscribers.

There's a slight problem, though. Atwell has already signed up for a new show on ABC called "Conviction" where she plays the lead role. Because of this, she might not be able to reprise her role as Agent Carter for season 3.

If Marvel and Netflix are really planning for "Agent Carter" season 3, it may be tricky bringing Atwell back.
