'Alien: Covenant' release date, latest news: Fox releases first official trailer on Christmas Day
On Christmas day, Fox released the first official trailer for the upcoming film "Alien: Covenant."
The trailer opens with a woman running down a hallway. The scene cuts to the woman telling another that she can't let the latter out of a locked room. Inside the locked room, the other woman is trapped with another person who turns out to be infected by one of the aliens.
Then, the trailer shows a starship reaching a planet and the explorers finding one of the alien starships. The trailer also showcases some thrilling and eerily familiar scare scenes, as well as the iconic xenomorph eggs. The entire trailer plays with a haunting cover of Nat King Cole's song "Nature Boy" heard in the background.
According to The Verge, the trailer bridges the gap between "Prometheus" and the original "Alien" movie. It also displays how the upcoming movie has combined effective elements from both films. It carried over the slick design and breathtaking visuals of "Prometheus" while also taking a cue from the first "Alien" movie in dishing out horror.
As to how the story will begin, Comicbook has reported its own "rough idea" based on the trailer, various interviews, and the movie's official synopsis. According to the media outlet, the colony ship Covenant will be arriving at a remote uncharted planet. The crew will investigate the planet's surface. In their investigation, they will find the crash site of the Juggernaut, the Engineer spacecraft in the film "Prometheus."
In inspecting the old ship, one of them discovers an alien egg and latches itself to his face to lay eggs inside him. Another crew member is also expected to be infected through an alien spore traveling into his ear canal. They will encounter a part of the previous Juggernaut crew, David (Michael Fassbender). From this point on, the Covenant crew will face horrifying experiences they did not expect would happen.
Directed by Ridley Scott, "Alien: Covenant" stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Billy Crudup, Carmen Ejogo, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smollet, Amy Seimetz, Cally Hernandez, Alexander England, Nathaniel Dean, and Benjamin Rigby.
"Alien: Covenant" is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on May 19, 2017.
