AMD Ryzen release date, specs and features news: new chipset line to last longer than that of its competitor?
AMD finally revealed a lot of new details about the upcoming Ryzen processors during last week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 event.
PC World shared a conversation with AMD chief technology officer Mark Papermaster after confirming that the semiconductor manufacturing company took four years to develop the new line of Ryzen processors. However, he also said that it will also take the same amount of time for the product's actual lifespan.
This means that the upcoming processor will last two years longer compared with its Intel competitor. "We're not going tick-tock," the AMD executive stated. "Zen is going to be tock, tock, tock."
The expected time span is consistent with the company's history of long-term platforms. In the past, the company's K8 series architecture was released with the Athlon 64 and the Opteron back in 2003, then it was replaced by the Sempron in 2007. On the other hand, the company's K10 series ran from 2007 up to 2010.
The company also revealed that the AMD Ryzen processors will feature as much as eight cores and 16 threads under the Zen architecture. This means that the new product line can have up to 40% IPC gains and performance increase compared to the Bulldozer central processing unit (CPU) products.
The Ryzen product line will also reportedly come out with a brand-new boost technology that is included in the SenseMI feature set.
On the other hand, AMD senior vice president Jim Anderson also revealed that the Ryzen processors will be immediately available upon launch. "We're not going to do a paper launch," he said, talking about the typical 'launch' for products where customers will have to wait for a longer time before it comes out in the market. "We've done that before. We're not going to mess with it."
AMD is expected to reveal the official release date of Ryzen processors in the coming days.
