With the first season of FX's "American Crime Story" raking in 22 Emmy nominations this year, the pressure is on executive producer Ryan Murphy and his team to craft a second season that will earn as many critical raves as the first one did.

Fortunately, "American Crime Story" may do just that with a second season devoted to telling the story of Hurricane Katrina and those affected by it.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy revealed that "American Crime Story" will be casting actors as former U.S. President George W. Bush and as other political figures who were involved in the handling of the disaster at the time. The character list for season 2 also reportedly includes former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, and former Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco.

Speaking on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, "American Crime Story" executive producer Brad Simpson said, "Yes, you'll have the famous people, and also people who weren't famous during Katrina."

While season 1 cast members Cuba Gooding, Jr., John Travolta, and Sarah Paulson have already expressed interest in appearing in season 2, Murphy told THR that formal deals will not be signed until the upcoming season's scripts have been completed.

"I don't think it's going to be like 'American Horror Story' where you see almost the entire troupe return," he added. "You will see some people, but not all of them."

Murphy also spoke about the significance of telling the story of Hurricane Katrina, telling THR: "It's an amazing tragedy that you cannot believe happened in America. But along with the overwhelming horribleness and sadness, you also have amazing stories of [people] coming together."

The "American Crime Story" boss, whose second season will be based off "The Great Deluge" by author Douglas Brinkley, said that the season could consist of 13 to 15 episodes.

"It's sprawling," he said of the Katrina story, then adding, "You're following a cast of characters from before the storm hits to its aftermath, and that's a big story."

The official release date for "American Crime Story" season 2 is yet to be announced. The upcoming season is currently in development.
