'American Horror Story' season 6 news: Shelby and Matt made everything up? Teaser, creators point at major twist

"American Horror Story" ("AHS") season 6 has reached a turning point, ending the story of Shelby (Lily Rabe and Sarah Paulson) and Matt Miller (Andre Holland and Cuba Gooding, Jr.). However, there are hints that the next half of the season could upend everything shown in the first half.

In Chapter 5, the latest episode, the show revealed the couple escaping from The Butcher (Kathy Bates) and the Polks with the help of the ghost of Edward Phillipe Mott (Evan Peters). Mott was the original builder of the haunted house they moved into on Roanoke Island.

Having survived their Roanoke nightmare, the present-day version of Shelby looked back on the ordeal and said that while she is grateful to have escaped, she has not completely gotten over the whole thing.

Just when viewers were probably wondering how the Millers' story could have ended just halfway through the season, the "My Roanoke Nightmare" documentary producer (Cheyenne Jackson) appeared, followed by a camera crew.

"The camera never stops, no matter what anybody says," he told his team. "Even if I tell you to stop you keep rolling, got it?" he said. 

The 15-second teaser in which Jackson appears in signals that the twist "AHS" co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk previously teased is about to play out.

In September, Falchuk told Entertainment Weekly, "Episode 5 ends and you're like, 'What happened?' Then episode 6 comes and you're like, 'Wait, what happened?'"

"I really think it's three seasons: it's like [episodes] 1 through 5, 6 through 9, and 10 is its own thing," he said about the current season.

As for what this major twist could be, TV Guide suggests that the various inconsistencies in Shelby and Matt's story could only mean that the couple has been telling lies and has made everything up.

This, coupled with the season's penchant for misdirection (as evidenced by the various misleading promos unveiled prior to the season premiere), could be pointing at the possibility that the entire first half of the season is one huge lie and that the true story will be unveiled in the back half of season 6.

TV Guide points out that the documentary producer already appears to know more about the Millers than they are letting on and that the rest of the season may reveal him digging deeper into their story.

The outlet also notes that the show itself has been teasing the couple's farce, what with their story being peppered with painfully obvious references to popular horror films such as "The Exorcist," "The Grudge," "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and "The Shining."

But if it is true that they are lying, what could be the reason behind this? What dark secrets are the two hiding?
