Not much is known about the upcoming sixth season of FX's "American Horror Story," and that's just how co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy wants it.

While numerous teasers about the upcoming sixth season of "American Horror Story" have popped up in recent weeks, it was previously revealed that most of these are red herrings. Unlike in previous years, in which the upcoming season's theme was announced beforehand, Murphy has decided to do things differently this year, keeping fans in a state of suspense until the season 6 premiere episode airs.

Murphy recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the popular FX anthology horror series, and while his lips were sealed when it came to the upcoming season's theme, he did give fans something to look forward to, saying that the series will continue on with a season 7 and a season 8.

"We wanted to [create a] different experience for the fans this year," he said, explaining that in past years, he revealed the coming season's theme and cast in January or February. But not this year.

"But that doesn't mean we'll do that for season seven or even season eight," he added. "We lay a lot of pipe, and you'll see it explode in seasons seven and eight."

Murphy explained that while FX has not officially given the green light to seasons 7 and 8, he and FX Network President and General Manager John Landgraf had always seen the series as something like "The Twilight Zone," which means that it could go on for many more seasons. The seasons will have various themes but will be connected by an inner mythology.

"I'll keep doing it for as long as we have the ideas and the momentum," Murphy said. "I really love doing it."

At the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, Landgraf revealed that this year's theme will remain a mystery until season 6 debuts.

"[The marketing team] went out and made many more trailers than you've actually seen for hypothetical seasons of 'American Horror Story,'" he said and confirmed that "One of them is accurate."

"American Horror Story" season 6 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
