With the premiere of "Assassin's Creed" less than two weeks away, 20th Century Fox has released the final international trailer for the upcoming action adventure film. The new footage does a good job of setting up the story and the journey that the film's protagonist, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), will have to take.

According to the official synopsis of the movie, "Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

In the trailer, viewers are treated to a narration from the film's villain, Alan Rikkin (Jeremy Irons), as he introduces the Apple of Eden, which can curb any impulse toward independence or rebellion. In an effort to locate the artifact, they have traced the ancestry of its protectors, discovering the last remaining bloodline — Callum.

Dr. Sofia Rikken (Marion Cotillard) introduces the Animus Project which is the technology that allows Callum to go back in time — during the Spanish Inquisition — to locate the artifact.

Once the narrative has been established, the trailer then features some of the action-packed scenes that fans of the video game franchise will surely enjoy. History buffs will also likely appreciate the 15th century architecture and costumes featured in the upcoming film.

According to Slash Film, provided that the "Assassin's Creed" film adaptation does well, the succeeding movies will possibly feature the Pieces of Eden, technologically advanced items that were used to control humans.

Aside from the released trailers, the "Assassin's Creed" virtual reality (VR) experience also serves to hype the upcoming film. For the entirety of this month, fans can head to Oculus Rift kiosks located inside AMC theaters in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, and New York to sample the VR content.

"Assassin's Creed," directed by Justin Kurzel, also stars Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams. The film will arrive in U.S. theaters on Dec. 21.
