It's a safe bet that the studio probably has plans to develop a sequel if they are willing to shell out around $130 to $200 million for a film. Unless that film is "Rogue One," of course. But in "Assassin's Creed's" case, the general belief is that 20th Century Fox has plans to make it into a film franchise.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Michael Fassbender confirmed that this was indeed the case, and he revealed that the filmmakers behind "Assassin's Creed" had always envisioned the film as part of a trilogy.

"This is the sort of origin of his story. We have an idea of where he's going to go over the next two films. We kind of did a three-film arc. We'll wait and see how people respond to this, but for sure, we have an idea of where he's going to go next," he stated.

This won't come as a surprise to fans who have been following the development of "Assassin's Creed." There's no denying that Fassbender has invested a lot of his time for this film. He has been with the project since 2012, and he is also pulling double duty. Besides playing the lead character, Callum Lynch, and his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, he is also producing the film. Furthermore, Fassbender was the one who talked director Justin Kurzel and actress Marion Cotillard into joining the project.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Irons is going to be portraying Alan Rikkin, the main antagonist of the film. In an interview with IGN, Irons talked about what made him decide to join the project. Aside from the fact that it's a big budget movie, Irons said he thinks that the Fassbender and Cotillard pairing is quite interesting.

"We've seen them in Macbeth and to see them doing a movie like this, maybe we'll make something which is better than the game which I think no film has yet done. You probably know better than I," he stated.

Video game movie adaptations have never done well on the big screens. Can "Assassin's Creed" break the curse?

"Assassin's Creed" is scheduled to be released on Dec. 21.
