'Avengers: Infinity War' release date, plot spoilers & cast news: Captain Marvel, Marvel TV heroes could appear in film
"Captain America: Civil War" (2016), the box office-smashing superhero hit from directors Anthony and Joe Russo, may have been jam-packed with characters, but the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War," promises to expand the cast even further.
Fans are expecting that the highly anticipated Marvel juggernaut will feature Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters like Doctor Strange, who is set to make his big screen debut in November, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, as confirmed by Vin Diesel. Rumors are also rife that Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Netflix's Marvel superheroes could also make the cut.
The Russos will also direct the next "Avengers" film and seemed to have implied this in a recent interview with the Toronto Sun. "It's an incredible piece of casting. You couldn't ask for better," Joe said about Larson, the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's growing roster of Hollywood stars playing comic book superheroes.
"Not only is she an amazingly talented actor but she's a wonderful human being," he added. "We're really looking forward to the opportunity of re-teaming with her," Joe continued.
While this last statement is practically a confirmation of Captain Marvel's participation in "Infinity War," the Russos were a bit more vague about casting the Netflix superheroes.
"We do consider everyone," Anthony told the outlet. "We don't want to get too specific about what's going to happen with these movies. We want these movies to be a surprise for audiences," he remarked.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been expanding in both the big screen and the small screen over the last few years, and yet the superheroes from the films and those from Netflix have only crossed paths in "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Avengers: Infinity War," which is still a couple of years away, seems like the perfect opportunity to bring all the Marvel characters together.
While the Russos have yet to confirm that Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist will be in "Infinity War," they have not closed the door on the possibility either, leaving fans with a glimmer of hope.
Earlier this year, the Russos sent Marvel fans into a speculation frenzy after Joe said that "Infinity War" had a story board "with 67 characters on it."
Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely later clarified Russo's statement, saying that the number comes from the characters who are available to use from the previous MCU films.
"...[T]hat doesn't mean that everyone is [in the movie], you know, there's not going to be 67 lead parts," McFeely told The Huffington Post.
"Avengers: Infinity War" hits theaters May 4, 2018.
