'Batman' standalone film release date, latest news: Ben Affleck steps down as director
Ben Affleck has stepped down as director of the upcoming standalone "Batman" movie.
According to Variety, Affleck is still on board to play Batman and will remain as a producer of the movie. However, sources said that Affleck and Warner Bros. has discussed how to best make the film, and they have come to a decision together that it would be in everyone's interest for Affleck not to direct in the film he is also set to star in.
Affleck has also recently issued a statement, saying: "There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world."
The media outlet went on to add that their sources claim that the decision for Affleck's removal as the upcoming movie's director was solely based on what's best for the project and had nothing to do with the recent disappointment over his directing job in "Live by Night."
According to Deadline, although the likes of Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan had produced successful Batman films, the situation is much more difficult for Affleck if he has to not only direct but also star in the movie. The prospect of fulfilling dual duties in the solo "Batman" film prompted him to reconsider and pass on the directing job to someone else.
Affleck remains committed to playing the role of "Batman" in the upcoming solo movie. He first played the role of Bruce Wayne and his superhero counterpart in "Batman v Superman." He also briefly appeared in "Suicide Squad." His next appearance as the masked superhero will be in the upcoming "Justice League" movie.
