'Blade Runner 2' release date and sequel: Movie gets an official title

The "Blade Runner" sequel has been awaited by fans for a long time. The movie finally has an official title revealed and it's set to come out in October 2017.

In the official Twitter page for the movie, the sequel's name was confirmed to be "Blade Runner 2049." The post also included a picture of stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling talking to director Denis Villeneuve and Ridley Scott.

The 2049 date on the title seems to hint at the timeline the movie will be set in. The original 1982 movie was set in the year 2019, so it means that the sequel will be taking place 30 years into Rick Deckard's (Harrison Ford) future.

It's also interesting to note that "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which also starred Ford, was set 30 years after the original "Star Wars" trilogy. It seems that Ford may be doing a lot of callbacks to some of his more famous roles.

The sequel will have Ford returning as Blade Runner Rick Deckard, and fans guess that it will delve more into the theory that he was actually a replicant (human-like robot). He will star alongside Ryan Gosling whose character, at this point, still has no name.

The plot of the movie is still under wraps but the cast list has a lot of stars in its roster. "Suicide Squad" star Jared Leto has been confirmed for a role. Barkhad Abdi ("Captain Phillips") has also been cast in the movie, as well as Mackenzie Davis ("The Martian"). "Blade Runner 2049" also has "Guardians of the Galaxy's" Dave Bautista confirmed for a role.

The movie is also reported to be released in virtual reality (VR) on the Oculus Rift and other Oculus Platforms. Whether the movie will be released in cinemas at the same time as the VR version is still unknown but Oculus promised to reveal more details over time.

"Blade Runner 2049" will hit theaters on Oct. 6, 2017.
