Things may not be taking off on a good start for NBC's hit crime drama in 2017.

After her heart-stopping skirmish with her boyfriend and Sandstorm's mole, Dr. Borden (Ukweli Roach), Patterson (Ashley Johnson) goes missing in the next episode of "Blindspot." Bringing the stakes a notch higher is a newly amnesiac Roman (Luke Mitchell) also going MIA.

Is Patterson's disappearance an indication that she may have been the one who got shot in the final scene of the midseason finale? Has Dr. Borden taken her hostage to care for her gunshot wound and try to find a way to make her understand his intentions both as a mole and as her lover? The episode synopsis only mentions Patterson's disappearance. Does this mean Dr. Borden will be walking through the doors of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) like nothing happened?

Worst case scenario is that he may have taken Patterson to Shepherd's lair (Michelle Hurd), who could in turn use her as a trump card to force Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) and his team to abide by Sandstorm's will. That is, if Patterson is not already dead.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly following the midseason finale last November, executive producer Martin Gero hinted that Patterson will survive the confrontation with Dr. Borden, but that the emotional ramifications of that experience is something that Patterson will be struggling with through the rest of the season.

"It's going to really shake her," Gero added.

When asked to confirm if Dr. Borden was the only mole in the FBI, Gero refused to confirm anything and instead went on to tease that the mild-mannered FBI psychologist was the mole that they have been talking about in the first half of the season.

Could there possibly be another mole lurking the halls of the FBI undetected? This seemed to be what Gero's statement in a Spoiler Room post on Entertainment Weekly suggested. The executive producer shared that despite losing their FBI connections with Jane and Dr. Borden, Sandstorm will still manage to stay a step ahead of Weller's team in the back half of "Blindspot" season 2.

Meanwhile, co-executive producer Alex Berger told TV Line that Jane will be caught in a dilemma regarding her brother's memories.

"To have any hope of stopping Sandstorm, Jane will need Roman to recover memories," Berger said. "But if he remembers her injecting him with ZIP, erasing his memory, it will tear them apart."

"Blindspot" season 2 will return on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
