"Bloodline" season 3 almost didn't happen. However, now that it finally is, fans of the twisted family drama that streams on Netflix is in for another bad news: the upcoming season will be the show's last.

It was reported back in June that the Netflix drama might be canceled not because of poor ratings but because it was getting too expensive to film it. Since it is entirely shot in the Florida Keys, its production enjoys tax incentives. However, the expiration of the tax incentives almost made it impossible for the series to continue, which is why the showrunners have to think on their feet to see which direction the show must go.

"Bloodline" season 3 was finally given the green light last July, and according to speculations, Netflix was keen on seeing how the story of the Rayburn family will pan out. There were obviously lots of loose threads left hanging after the season 2 finale, which only a third season could tie up.

Nevertheless, The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed that the upcoming third season of the Kyle Chandler-starrer will be the last for the series on the streaming service. According to THR, Netflix took Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, by surprise with its move since the former has previously declared that season 3 will not be the last for the series.

Not only will season 3 be the last one airing on the streaming service but Netflix has also slashed down the episode orders from 13 to 10, as well as licensing fees on the show.

It remains to be seen if executive producers Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelma, and Glenn Kessler will ask Sony to shop future seasons of "Bloodline" elsewhere. The three have previously said that they have a five- or six-season plan for the family drama. Apparently, when they pitched the idea for the series, it was on the premise that they have enough material and ideas to spread the story through five or six seasons.

It looks like what Todd Kessler said back in June regarding the show's uncertain future is coming to light. He said then that Netflix was trying to see "how it's doing for them and how it's performing."

"Bloodline" season 3 is set to premiere on Netflix for the last time in 2017.
