'Bones' season 12 episode 2 spoilers: Team investigates artificial intelligence-related killing; EP teases new villain
Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) team up to take on the Bots on the upcoming episode of Fox's "Bones" season 12.
Titled "The Final Chapter: The Brain in the Bot," next week's episode will see the team investigate a case connected to artificial intelligence. According to the official synopsis, a man involved with creating artificially intelligent bots is killed. After his body is discovered, the team must figure out whether the victim's own A.I. robot was programmed to end his life. Meanwhile, Brennan plans a special surprise for everyone as a celebration of her 40th birthday.
The show recently returned for its farewell season with a bang after featuring a major plot twist. As many fans suspected, Zack (Eric Millegan) was not the Puppeteer. It turned out that Zack kidnapped Brennan to save her from the real serial killer, his now-dead doctor Mihir Roshan (Ravi Kapoor). Now that the Puppeteer is gone, the team will be dealing with a new kind of evil when "Bones" heads to its fourth episode.
In a recent interview with TV Line, co-showrunner Michael Peterson revealed that a new big bad will be introduced on this season's episode 4. He hinted that the new character is Booth and Brennan's last and possibly biggest threat yet.
"This one is a little more action-oriented, more military-based," Peterson said. "And this one is born out of revenge more than any other storyline. This is a coordinated attack and it is directly aimed at Booth and Brennan, and that was the intention from the very beginning," he added.
The premiere also marked Deschanel's directorial debut, and Peterson has nothing but good words for the lead actress' work behind the camera. "Just wonderful. There is nobody who knows the show better," the EP stated, referring to Deschanel's first stint as director.
Peterson went on to say that she has great skills because her father is Caleb Deschanel, an Oscar-winning cinematographer. "She knows how to move a camera around. She did a fantastic job. This premiere was a really claustrophobic episode, and she opened it up in some great ways," Peterson continued.
The 12th season of "Bones" airs every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
