'Broken Age: Act 2' Review, Gameplay Roundup: Terrific Puzzles and Witty Dialogue
With the second act of "Broken Age" releasing this week, reviewers have taken a good look at it and have once again described it as a worthy point-and-click adventure game with witty dialogue and a great story.
Praise from the game has been coming in from a variety of fronts. In its review, IGN states that the second act provides a fitting sequel to the first that ended in a cliffhanger. It adds that the second half of the game is smart, fun to play and challenging. The second act is double the size of the first.
There are also new characters, and several reveals that make the story interesting. As for the puzzles which make up a huge part of the game, the reviewers agree that they are well crafted and ingenious for the most part but some can become a bit tiresome.
The Verge, in its review, describes how the game has a good amount of good and bad parts but remains a "heartwarming adventure" on the whole. The review then points towards the development of the game and how it was not finished in time, resulting in the full game not releasing last year.
This left the second part dangling in mid-air without an episode recap. Those who play it for the first time will have to go back to the first part to find out what happened. Otherwise, the review notes that where the game over-delivers is in its witty dialogue and puzzles.
The game's lack of geographical variety is criticized in the review by Eurogamer, which notes that even through the two main characters Shay and Vella get trapped in each other's world, they only get to explore the same locations that featured in the first act.
This means that Shay gets to visit Vella's world which has been altered a little bit, while Vella hangs around in the spaceship. The only different location is at the end of the game when the players get to visit three new rooms. This is dubbed as "geographical inertia" by the reviewer who states that some fans will find it boring even though the game has fine aesthetics and several complex puzzles.
