'Castle' Season 8 News, Cast Rumors: Series in Limbo as Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic Still Not Signed Up

For a show that focuses on solving mysteries, the biggest mystery right now to be solved on "Castle" is whether the show will be back for Season 8 or not.

The series has yet to be renewed for an eighth season, and it is due in part to the fact that its stars, Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, haven't signed new contracts.

Even fellow cast members seem to be in limbo, as cast mate Seamus Dever disclosed. His contract is also up, but he doesn't know what's "...going to happen, and to be honest, no one has talked to me...about next season. I'd like to have some answers because my family wants to know if I'm going to be employed. But right now, it's really up in the air."

It looks like the decision will be a buzzer-beater so to speak, and this makes planning the remainder of Season 7 very challenging for its show's writers.

Executive producer David Amann said he's trying to avoid the distraction. "We're hopeful that everything gets resolved," he said.

He said they have thought about a bunch of different scenarios, but their main obligation is just "...to our audience and [to deliver] great shows. We're just building the best end of season that we can."

Dever teased about how Season 7 will end. "I think we are headed toward some sort of cliffhanger. We go back into the Beckett mythology and that might play strongly in the end. He is still hopeful that that show will live to see Season 8," he said.

"From what I'm hearing, [the delayed renewal] is not from lack of want at the network level. They're very happy with the success of our show; it's just about getting everybody back to the table," he said.

So the real question now is: Will Fillion and Katic want to do another season? Some reports point to the actors not really expressing a desire to continue the series. Katic has been quoted as saying the following: "If the character is complete, if there is nowhere else to go creatively, then I think it's better to stop when you're on top, because I admire the way that they did that with 'The Wire.' Tell a great story and then go home and move onto something else. Don't milk it 'just because.'"
