'Chicago P.D.' season 4 episode 12 spoilers, news: Church compromises murder case; Rixton lies to Voight

An investigation is compromised by a church offering sanctuary to the primary subjects on the upcoming episode of "Chicago P.D." season 4.

Titled "Sanctuary," next week's episode will see how far a religious organization will go to protect suspected murderers. According to the official synopsis, a female jogger is brutally murdered in the park. Intelligence Unit newcomer Rixton (guest star Nick Wechsler) and Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) immediately arrive at the crime scene where they see two suspects running away.

When the unidentified men make their way inside a church nearby, the parishioners and priest gather outside to block law enforcement from entering the area. While searching for new pieces of evidence, Rixton gets caught in a lie with his mentor, Voight (Jason Beghe).

In the latest episode 12 promo from NBC, Voight appears to be having a heated confrontation with one of the priests of the church. The tension quickly escalates when the church becomes engulfed in fire.

Rixton was first introduced in last week's episode as Voight's former colleague during his gang unit days. Since he is a newcomer in the unit, fans can expect the other members of Intelligence to be interested in Rixton's backstory and why he ended up in their group.

"There's obviously people in the unit want to know what this guy's story is. If he was a former protege of Voight's from the gang unit, then does he represent the old Voight, which we knew from Chicago Fire, which was the kind of no-rules person which Voight has evolved from?" showrunner Matt Olmstead teased. He also said, "So the journey for his former protege is can he also make that transition? Or is he stuck in a certain methodology that is far from being with Voight back in the wild west of the gang unit?"

He went on to explain that the detectives are still not ready to trust their new co-worker yet, so each of them will have a different response to his arrival. They will also go out of their way to learn about his relationship with Voight.

The fourth season of "Chicago P.D." airs every Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
