Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather news: Mayweather confirms the fight will happen, says Freddie Roach

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has refueled speculations about a potential Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match.

The long-time Manny Pacquiao trainer revealed that unbeaten boxer Mayweather recently paid him a visit and asked him to agree to train McGregor for the future fight.

In an interview for the latest edition of "Inside MMA" on AXS TV, Roach spoke about the possible coaching job, saying that Mayweather visited his gym last week and asked him to take on the task of training McGregor if he is asked.

"... because he told me the fight is going to happen and we're going to make a lot of money," Roach said.

However, Roach said he probably won't be training McGregor for the Mayweather bout, as he thinks that it would take him at least three years to get the UFC champ in the shape required to fight Mayweather and make the match competitive.

"I don't think it's really possible for a MMA fighter to fight a boxer," Roach explained. "I don't think it's really fair."

The MMA featherweight cemented his position as the biggest star in the Ultimate Fighting Championship with a 13-second knockout against Jose Aldo in December. However, his first UFC defeat against Nate Diaz in March led to a surprise retirement, which he later back-pedalled from.

Meanwhile, Mayweather has remained unbeaten in the world of professional boxing with a 49-0 record. The boxing champ announced his retirement in September 2015 after defeating WBA interim champion Andre Berto.

In an interview with ESPN, boxing analyst and trainer Teddy Atlas said that McGregor would need at least five years of training before he is ready to fight Mayweather.

"He has no chance in a traditional boxing match," Atlas said. "His only chance would be with MMA rules, where he could try to bring Floyd to the mat where he could, of course, easily be the victor."
