'Death Stranding' release date, gameplay news: Upcoming title to have more action than horror
Hideo Kojima made fans excited and a little bit creeped out when he released the first trailer for "Death Stranding" last June 2016. The second trailer, first shown on the Game Show Awards, did little to clear up what the storyline of the upcoming game was, and it further added to horror vibe built upon by the first teaser.
However, Kojima dispelled rising rumors that the game was horror-themed, saying, "It will be an action game if you really want to put a genre on it" during an interview with Digital Spy. However, he added that the game would be "unlike anything you've anything you've ever played before." He also said that the game will feature something that "won't fit in established terms."
According to Kojima, the game will follow an open world setup, where players have the freedom to choose what they want to do in the in-game universe. He said that there is something in store for fighters, although those who do not want to battle also have "other ways to play this game."
The game stars Norman Reedus, who is best known for his role in "The Walking Dead." The villain, meanwhile, is Mads Mikkelsen of "Hannibal," who admitted he got lost himself when Kojima tried to explain the plot of "Death Stranding." Director Guillermo del Toro is also part of the project.
The trailers show the characters in a dark, post-apocalyptic world, with skeleton soldiers. At the heart of the storyline are "strands" — hence the title — or the different connections between the characters, and even in relation to the player.
"I want the story and the world and the gameplay, as well as the characters of the game and the player – the life and death elements – all to be tied together," said Kojima.
"Death Stranding" is currently in the early stages of development. No release date has been given for the game yet, although Kojima has said in another interview that the game will be out before the Olympics in 2018. The game is expected to be put under the spotlight for E3 2017. It will first be released on the PS4, although a port for PC will also be developed.
