Detroit Pistons trade recap: Morris proves to be a good gamble

Now entering his sixth year in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Marcus Morris is now a cornerstone of the Detroit Pistons.

Making his name as one half of the Morris twins with the Phoenix Suns, many initially believed that it was his brother, Markieff, who would have a brighter future.

Markieff had the better averages which led to everyone thinking that Marcus was pulling his brother down.

However, July 2015 was a big time for Marcus as he was traded to the Pistons along with Reggie Bullock and Danny Granger.

Looking at his first year with the Pistons, it is safe to say that he is a star in his own right. Marcus averaged his career highs with 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He also enjoyed more playing time as his numbers increased to almost 36 minutes from 26 a season before.

The Detroit Free Press admits that the trade to bring Morris over to Detroit was a good move. Now, the Pistons have a strong core with Morris playing alongside Andre Drummond and Reggie Jackson as he provides strength from the block as well as reliable outside shooting.

Furthermore, Morris is only 27 years old which means he has yet to enter the prime of his career.

Even better is that the Pistons only have to pay around $5 million a year for his services. In 2014, back in Phoenix, Morris signed a four-year $20 million contract. That means that Morris will get around $4.6 million in the coming year, only actually reaching $5 million later on.

For that price and the steep increase in output that he has provided, it is definitely a stellar deal for the Pistons.

The only question is how can Morris develop is game even more to help the team as they try to become more of an Eastern Conference threat rather than simply being a team settling at the low end of the table.
