'Devious Maids' season 5 news: Series canceled; Story of 4 Latina maids end with cliffhanger

Here's a bit of sad news for avid followers of Lifetime's "Devious Maids." The show has just been officially canceled; there won't be a fifth season for the drama that chronicles the lives of four Latina maids.

Deadline got first dibs on the news that Lifetime has opted not to renew the series for what was supposedly its fifth season. "Devious Maids" season 4 ended a couple of weeks ago.

A brainchild of "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry and Eva Longoria, the series took on a telenovela format. It piloted on ABC but later on migrated to Lifetime, where it got off to a strong start. It's season 1 finale peaked at 3 million live and same-day viewers, but the seasons following it saw a significant decrease in viewership. Still, it was a consistent force on the network and had better viewership than "UnReal," another original scripted series airing on Lifetime.

"UnReal" was renewed even while its second season was still airing, although some are arguing that "Devious Maids" has a more coherent storyline than the former.

Rumors of the cancellation have been swirling after the season 4 finale aired, but a recent tweet by Dania Ramirez, who plays Rosie on the series, seemed to hint that "Devious Maids" season 5 will push through. Even executive producer Sabrina Wind has been giving open-ended statements concerning the fate of the show which follows the lives of a close-knit group of female friends that include Rosie, Marisol (Ana Ortiz), Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez), and Zoila (Judy Reyes).

According to Zap2It's TV by the Numbers, the season 4 average of "Devious Maids" was 0.3 same-day ratings and 920,000 viewers, which shows a huge decrease from the 0.5 same-day and 1.36 million viewers for season 3.

Now it looks like fans will never know whatever happened to Marisol who ended up missing on her wedding day in the season 3 finale.
