'Dishonored 2' release date & latest update: 'Book of Karnaca' trailer drops; gamers criticize new Outsider voice actor
Bethesda has dropped a new trailer for "Dishonored 2" just days away from the upcoming stealth action/adventure video game's launch date.
The trailer, titled "Book of Karnaca," highlighted the video game's new storyline and setting. Presented like a pop-up book come to life, the new trailer explored the complex world of Karnaca, where the deposed Empress Emily Kaldwin must travel to reclaim her rightful place on the throne. The storybook presentation set this new trailer apart from the previous one, which focused on Emily and her father, the "Dishonored" protagonist Corvo Attano. In the "Dishonored" video game franchise, gamers play as either Corvo or Emily.
"In Karnaca, there is always a choice: mercy or revenge. Savior or assassin," The Outsider said in the new trailer. "What would you give up to take back what's yours?"
The Outsider, a returning fan favorite character, is voiced in "Dishonored 2" by "Gotham" actor Robin Lord Taylor. In "Dishonored," it was "Straw Dogs" actor Billy Lush who lent his pipes to the mysterious force who gave Corvo his powers. The surprising switcharoo, which has made The Outsider sound more youthful, has been criticized by some "Dishonored" fans.
"Am I the only one that really preferred the voice of The Outsider in the first game, rather than in this one?" YouTuber KingOfShooters commented on the new trailer.
"I feel like Robin Lord Taylor probably delivered the lines well, but I loved Billy Lush's monotone yet kinda scary voice," PRWoodley1024 wrote. "The Outsider felt more disconnected and untouchable before, now he feels a bit less mystical," the user continued.
While Lush narrated the "Dishonored 2" trailer released during E3 last year, Arkane Studios later revealed that the actor had been replaced by Taylor. The video game developer initially chalked up the swap to scheduling conflicts, but Lush refuted this during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit this summer.
"My schedule was wide open," he wrote. "I never got the call. I never got an explanation," he added.
"Dishonored 2" will be made available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Friday, Nov. 11.
