'Doctor Strange' news, spoilers: Film's Wong won't be a 'tea-making manservant,' actor Benedict Wong reveals
Wong, Doctor Strange's sidekick and valet in the Marvel Comics, won't be a "tea-making manservant" in the upcoming Marvel film, according to the actor who plays him, Benedict Wong.
Wong (the actor), who is best known for his roles in the films "The Martian" (2015) and "Prometheus" (2012), will play Wong (the character), Doctor Strange's (Benedict Cumberbatch) loyal companion in the hotly anticipated Marvel feature film. But the actor recently revealed that his Wong will be taking a detour from how the character is depicted in the comics.
In the source material, Wong is a servant and teacher to Doctor Stephen Strange. In the film, however, Wong will not be serving the titular superhero.
"I'm certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant," Wong told Den of Geek. "We're heading in a different direction. He's more of a drill sergeant."
"There isn't any martial arts for Wong in 'Doctor Strange' actually, he's more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj," he added. "He's one of the masters of sorcery."
Wong also spoke about the possibility of a sequel to the upcoming "Doctor Strange," saying that, for now, he's just happy that the film is almost done.
"I'm very excited to see what happens," he added.
Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen, whose role as the villain Kaecilius in "Doctor Strange" was recently leaked by a Marvel toy packaging, spoke about the ambiguity of his character.
"He's not a villain in that way — he's a man who believes in something else than the hero," the actor told Yahoo! Movies U.K. "He is the antagonist, of course, but he's not necessarily wrong."
Apart from Cumberbatch, Mikkelsen and Wong, the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Night Nurse, and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.
"Doctor Strange" hits theaters Nov. 4.
