'Doctor Strange' Release Date, Latest News and Cast Rumors: Sherlock Holmes Benedict Cumberbatch in Line With Marvel
"Doctor Strange" has officially been slated for release in 2016, but details about the movie have not yet been revealed.
There is intense discussion online whether or not "Dr. Strange" will revolve around the origin of Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange — the former neurosurgeon who later on became earth's Sorcerer Supreme, the ultimate protector versus all threats magical and mystical in nature.
Scott Derrickson, who was chosen by Marvel Studios to direct the film adaptation of "Dr. Strange," gave broad hints about the direction the movie will take.
He posted in his Twitter account an image without a caption that many have interpreted as subtly showing what the movie's focus will be. The image was taken from a graphic novel by J.M. DeMatteis and Dan Green titled "Doctor Strange: Into Shamballa," which first saw publication in 1986.
The story of that graphic novel shows how Strange started communicating with The Lords of Shamballa, eventually telling its audience about Strange's transition into someone who can communicate with the "Ancient One."
In any case, it's still a guessing game as to how the movie will handle the numerous plot lines and characters presented in the comics in a way that is understandable and comprehensive even for non-readers.
According to IMDB, actor Benedict Cumberbatch is rumored to be the closest in the running for the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. "Deadline" has also reported that Cumberbatch is reputed to be in final negotiations with Marvel.
From playing the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes on TV to essaying the role of a neurosurgeon-turned-powerful-earth-protector, Cumberbatch appears to be a good choice for Marvel.
