'Double Dragon 4' release date, news: Beat 'em up game with old school gameplay arriving on Jan. 30, 2017
Thirty years after the launch of "Double Dragon," Arc System Works has announced that they will be releasing the latest installment in the beat 'em up video game series, "Double Dragon IV," in January 2017.
The game developer recently released a teaser trailer which pays homage to the original game. It also previews the gameplay for "Double Dragon IV." While visual quality has drastically improved in the upcoming game, it still features the old school style of gameplay that players enjoyed back in the '80s.
According to Siliconera, "Double Dragon IV" features the return of twin martial artists, Billy and Jimmy Lee. Immediately after the events of "Double Dragon II," the duo will have to face and defeat another threat. Based on the menu screen seen in the trailer, the 2D side-scrolling action game will have two types of gameplay: Story Mode and Two-Player (2P) Duel Mode.
While details for the upcoming game are still scarce at this time, it has been revealed that a lot of the people who were involved with "Double Dragon" will be working on the latest installment. Takaomi Kaneko will serve as the producer for "Double Dragon IV" while Yoshihisa Kishimoto will direct. Koji Ogata has been enlisted for character design. Meanwhile, Kazunaka Yamane and Kei Oyama will work on music and programming, respectively.
"Double Dragon" was developed by TechnÅs Japan and released in 1987. The original video game saw the Lee brothers on a quest to save Billy's love interest, Marian, against a gang of thugs by utilizing karate, tai chi and Shorinji Kempo techniques. Players on the Nintendo Entertainment System had to clear four stages: a city slum, factory, forest, and the gang's hideout. In single-player mode, players could rescue Marian by defeating the boss. However, if there are two players, they will have to duke it out to win Marian's affections. Arc System Works bought the series rights in 2015.
"Double Dragon IV" is slated to arrive on Jan. 30, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows PC via Steam.
