'Empire' season 3: New teaser shows Cookie-Lucious teenage romance

"Empire" season 3 airs Sept. 21 9 p.m. ET on Fox Network. | FOX Network

Season 3 of the American musical drama television series "Empire" will take viewers to walk down memory lane. Fox has recently released a trailer of the upcoming season showing how Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) get wrapped up in each other the first time the two lovebirds met.

The teenage throwback romance is quite a surprising treat for fans following the royal couple's tumultuous on-and-off relationship. In the teaser flick (watch trailer below), young Cookie (Ajiona Alexus) tells young Lucious (Jeremy Carver), "When I first saw you rap, it changed my life."

Their relationship has taken a backseat after a series of troubles suggest an end to the pairing that built the "Empire." Cookie was furious over Lucious' marriage to Booboo Kitty (Grace Gealey). The Lyon patriarch took the decision to marry Kitty to prevent her from testifying against him in court, Latin Post reported. Painfully hurt over the sham wedding, Cookie hooked up with a new man named Angelo Dubois (Taye Diggs). Equally hurt himself, Lucious hopes for reunion someday.

In another update, the "Empire" patriarch and matriarch are both expected to have a tough ride in season 3. The arrival of Lucious' estranged brother Tariq (Morocco Omari) is likely to cause a lot of troubles ahead. Little is known about Tariq as he only appeared on the scene in season 2 finale. He seemed quite determined to bring his half-brother down.

"This don't have to get ugly, Cookie. But if you want, I can come after you, your kids," said Tariq who happened to be Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, Hollywood Life reported.

Another spoiler update reveals that Mariah Carey will have a special guest appearance on Fox's hit musical TV show. As reported by the Inquisitr, the siren will play a superstar role. The report also stated that she already wrapped up filming. Meanwhile, Howard is facing a real-life off-the-show problem. The "Empire" star is now facing a lawsuit filed by his management company, Authentic Talent and Literary Management. The latter alleged that the actor owes the company $250,000 including 10 percent of his income from the TV series.

"Empire" season 3 airs Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on Fox Network.
