'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' news: Director David Yates talks about returning to the 'Harry Potter' universe
November will see the arrival of not one, but two magic-themed movies in the form of Marvel's "Doctor Strange" and J.K. Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." The director of the latter, David Yates, talks about returning to the world of "Harry Potter" after supposedly ending the franchise back in 2011.
Yates credits it all to a "delightful" script. In an interview with Collider, he said, "Well, they sent me the script and I wasn't certain 'cause I'd spent six years here on those four 'Potter' films, and they sent me the script and I was really nervous 'cause I had to really fall in love with it to come back. And I didn't know if I could come back. And then, it was just the most delightful read. It was charming, moving, tender. It felt fresh and it was with a bunch of people that I really love working with so, it was a bit of a no-brainer."
It's also interesting to note that this will be the first "Potter" movie to come straight from Rowling herself. The previous films have been adapted from her series of books, but "Fantastic Beasts" has a screenplay written by Rowling with a story intended for the cinema.
Yates also shared that working on something outside of the books is "liberating" because there are no pre-existing expectations that the production has to follow.
The movie will be set decades before the "Harry Potter" saga in the year 1926. It follows the adventures of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he tries to collect a series of various mythical creatures which were accidentally released in New York. The movie also stars Ezra Miller, Jon Voight, Colin Farrell, Ron Perlman, and Samantha Morton.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" hits theaters this coming Nov. 18.
