'Fear the Walking Dead' season 2 news, spoilers: Chris 'is out there' somewhere, showrunner says
The ending of the latest episode of "Fear the Walking Dead" season 2 left Chris' (Lorenzo James Henrie) fate and whereabouts in question.
In "Date of Death," Travis' (Cliff Curtis) attempts to course-correct his son finally revealed itself to be a futile exercise. In it, Chris assisted his new friends in the murder of one of their own by subduing his father, who was trying to protect the severely wounded James (Israel Broussard). Chris then abandoned his father and left with Derek (Kenny Wormald) and Brandon (Kelly Blatz).
But in a shocking turn of events, the two later turned up at the hotel where Madison (Kim Dickens) and the rest of the original group had sought refuge. The fact that Chris was not with them raised several questions. Where is Chris? Is he dead or alive? Will he somehow bump into Nick (Frank Dillane) or even Ofelia (Mercedes Mason)?
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, "Fear the Walking Dead" showrunner Dave Erickson hinted at the troubled young man's fate, saying: "Chris is out there. We will answer the question of 'Where's Chris?' in the final two episodes, and that's part of the story to be told."
Erickson also spoke about the breakdown of Travis and Chris' relationship, explaining that at the end of the previous episode, the tables were turned and it was Chris trying to educate his father.
According to the "Fear" boss, Travis had been trying to turn the incident with the farmer into a teaching opportunity, to try and make Chris understand that what he did with Chris' mother was not the same as what they did to the man. But in "Date of Death," it was Chris trying to teach Travis about the state of the world and what he believed they need to do to survive in it.
"Or, it's actually this gift in some respects," Erickson said, "because what he's doing is freeing up Travis to return to Madison and Alicia, which is deep down what he wanted to do all the time."
Meanwhile, Dillane recently revealed in an interview with Digital Spy that he often had trouble differentiating himself from his character, the former junkie, Nick.
"I've been having troubles with my own sanity in terms of having a character alive at the same time I am," he told the outlet. "I often get muddied in Nick," he added.
"Fear the Walking Dead" season 2 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.
