Season 4 of "Game of Thrones" saw Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) dying in combat with the Mountain aka Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafthór Júlíus Björnsson).

The fifth season is going to deal with the repercussions of his death and how his three illegitimate daughters, the "Sand Snakes," will plot their revenge.

In the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books that inspired the TV series, Oberyn has eight daughters. However, in "Game of Thrones" only three will be focused on. They are Obara (Keisha Castle-Hughes), Nymeria (Jessica Henwick) and Tyene (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers).

As with their characters in the books, the three have a particular set of skills and training with various weapons. However, all three are illegitimate as Oberyn never married their different mothers; hence they have the surname "Sand" which is the name used to such offspring in Dorne.

As for the skills of each of the Sand Snakes, in the TV series Obara fights with a spear, Nymeria users a whip and Tyene favors twin daggers. This is different from the books where Nymeria is described as beautiful and dangerous while Tyene is an expert with poisons.

HBO has released very little information about the three Sand Snakes, but photos of them recently made their way to Entertainment Weekly. The online publication described them as three strong women who collaborate to avenge their father Oberyn's death.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, show runner David Benioff described them as "constantly fighting between themselves. But when an outsider comes in, they all band together and unify,"

Castle-Hughes, who plays Obara, said until now the TV series has never featured women like the Sand Snakes. She said as the "violent and manipulative" trio collaborate, they become very dangerous.

A collaborating Sand Snakes could mean big trouble for Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who is set to head to Dorne. The recent trailer for the show also hinted that he would fight some if not all of the Sand Snakes.
