'Girl Meets World' being shopped around for a possible new platform, creator reveals
There is still a glimmer of hope for "Girl Meets World" fans.
After the prolonged announcement of the Disney XD show's cancellation earlier this month, word has it that the series is being shopped around for a new platform.
In a recent chit-chat with media outlet TVLine, show creator Michael Jacobs revealed that there are already developments, albeit nothing major thus far, in terms of finding a new home for the spinoff series.
"There are talks underway, but we're at the very very beginning stages," he said. "And I can tell you it's because of the audience's reaction to the cancellation that there is interest in other places. For anyone in show business, if you ask them why they're doing something and they say they're doing it for themselves, they won't sustain long. Those that answer 'We're doing it for the audience' and mean it, they sustain," he continued.
In this day and age, a show cancellation does not necessarily mean the end of it. With a lot of other media platforms different from TV networks, a property can move forward just as long as it is still deemed to have a huge loyal fanbase.
Take for example the successful on-air comeback of "Nashville." The musical drama was suddenly axed by ABC last summer as part of the company's major cancellation spree. But over the course of the months that have followed, talks of another arrangement that will bring it back have ensued. And coupled with the undeniable clamor from its fans, it was then picked up by CMT which arguably is a better fit in terms of overall core theme. Now, the new partnership has proven beneficial to both parties as the series is raking in viewership ratings.
Jacobs relates to a similar scenario for "Girl Meets World" citing fan action via their independently organized paper plane campaign. "Networks want to do something to gather an audience. The fact that there is an audience who's been so loyal says a lot," the writer spilled.
Despite the talks still in the developmental stage, it should be enough, at least for now, for fans who are still shocked with the cancellation. Nevertheless, a lot of them have already pointed out that the coming-of-age theme of "Girls Meets World" does not necessarily fit well in the targeted demographics of Disney XD. This can be a good compass to what kind of distribution the show should land on should there be a new home for it.
