Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) made her "Grey's Anatomy" season 13 debut on Thursday after visiting her daughter Sofia and her ex-wife Callie ("Grey's" alum Sara Ramirez) in New York off-screen.

She returned to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, where her colleague and good friend Alex (Justin Chambers) was facing the prospect of a prison sentence after almost beating DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) to death. Because both doctors had friends and relationships in Grey Sloan, the hospital was divided about the issue.

Capshaw recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the situation at the hospital, the possibility of a reunion for the fan-favorite Calzona, and Arizona's new love interest in season 13.

"I don't know that Arizona necessarily interprets of him going back to his thuggish days," the actress said about Alex, with whom Arizona has had a long-running mentor-mentee relationship. "My understanding was always how upset she was for having done it and jeopardized his career," she added.

As for the possibility of Callie and Arizona someday getting back together, Capshaw said that she was led to believe that the two have moved on and, in Callie's case, found happiness elsewhere. The "Grey's" actress also said she thought Callie and Penny's (Samantha Sloyan) relationship was lovely and that they had wonderful chemistry.

"[I]n our Shondaland universe, they exist somewhere being happy," she said, "and so I think there is definitely room for Arizona to be happy as well."

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Capshaw spoke about Arizona's new love interest. While the actress admitted that she has no idea if this person will be someone in the medical field, she said she thinks it will be someone who has a good amount of excitement and confidence.

"I have a feeling it will be very nice for them to have that quid pro-quo and lively exchange and banter," she said about Arizona and the new apple of her eye. "It would help if there was a heat to it. I hope it's fun, sexy and exciting," she added.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 13 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
