'Grey's Anatomy' season 13 spoilers: Jackson's father arrives; ABC boss speaks on possible endgame for series
Jackson Avery's (Jesse Williams) family is about to get bigger when ABC's top-rating medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" returns for the back half of season 13.
Jackson was first introduced in the show back in season 6 as a former Mercy West practitioner. While viewers have already met his grandfather Harper Avery (Chelcie Ross) and his mother Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen), the plastic surgeon's father has been missing in action since he joined Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, cast member Sarah Drew confirmed that Jackson's father will finally be introduced this season. However, details on his portrayer or when he'll make his first appearance are still being kept under wraps. Drew, who plays Dr. April Kepner in the series, also shared some teasers on an upcoming episode that will focus on April and Jackson.
The actress teased that one particular episode will see the divorced couple heading to Montana and possibly down the road to reconciliation. Though Drew didn't say what leads them to Montana, she revealed that it will be a special moment for the two characters. "There's going to be a Jackson and April episode, just the two of them," Drew hinted. "We're dealing with a case and it's just the two of us in Montana for the whole episode," she added.
"Grey's Anatomy" has been on the air for more than a decade, yet it continues to defy its age — even ranking as ABC's highest-rated show. With the series now in its 13th season, some fans are wondering if there is already an endgame for the drama in sight.
ABC's entertainment president Channing Dungey recently attended the Television Critics Association press tour, and she was asked about a possible conclusion for the venerable program. According to Dungey, she doesn't see "Grey's Anatomy" closing its curtains in the near future.
"I don't want to think about endgame for 'Grey's,'" she said, adding, "We are doing better in Season 13 than we have done in awhile, and I feel that the show creatively is firing on all cylinders. As long as the fans remain engaged, ratings are good and Shonda creatively is excited about it, let's keep going."
The 13th season of "Grey's Anatomy" returns Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
