The promised epic showdown between erstwhile allies Nick (David Giuntoli) and Renard (Sasha Roiz) takes a strange and unexpected turn in the next episode of "Grimm."

In the promo for the next episode titled "Trust Me Knot," desperate times call for drastic measures as Renard closes in on Nick and his crew. With help from the same Hexenbiest spell that has once briefly turned Adalind (Claire Coffee) into Juliette (Elizabeth Tulloch), and Juliette into Adalind, Nick takes on Renard's appearance in order to throw off the authorities, get as close as possible to Renard, and take the crazed and self-preserving captain down himself.

It will be remembered that the potion that should be inhaled through the Witch's Hat in order to induce the transformation was the very same potion that turned Juliette into a Hexenbiest. And while the spell involved in that unfortunate transformation was a lot more complicated than just turning into Renard for a day, there is no knowing how such a spell could affect a Grimm in the long run.

It does make for a rather bizarre showdown between Renard and himself, which will surely boggle the minds of everyone who are not in on the secret.

In an interview with TV Guide, co-executive producer David Greenwalt revealed that the first three episodes of the show's sixth and final season will bring the long-awaited showdown between Grimm and Royal-Zauberbiest to a head before seeing its surprising conclusion.

Co-executive producer Jim Kouf added that Renard's actions have always been rooted in a deep-seated need to be in a position of power, which he has been denied of, with him being a royal bastard and all. But Greenwalt went on to tease that Renard will definitely gain some form of redemption later in the season.

"It's not so much that he's been in a grey area and now he's in a dark area. He's doing what is best for his character and purpose in life," Greenwalt said.

Nick and Renard's epic showdown happens on Friday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
