'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Release Date, Plot News: Nebula Returns, Sequel to Deviate From Comics
The sequel of the hit Marvel Studios film "Guardians of the Galaxy" will likely be different from the comic book, with a villainess returning to haunt alien assassin Gamora, director and screenwriter James Gunn revealed.
Speaking live on the new social media app Periscope last April 1, Gunn told "Guardians" fans that he recently gave his story pitch for the sequel to Marvel. Even though his story pitch deviated from the way the sequel in the Marvel Comics stories went, Gunn said his script was warmly accepted by executives, producers, and executive producers Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz, and Victoria Alonso.
"Not everything is going to happen in the movies the same as the comics," he said. "Ronan is a bad guy, we killed him."
The script, Gunn said, is "very, very far along" – 70 pages long, to be exact.
Gunn also revealed that Karen Gillian will return to play the role of Nebula, who is the adopted sister of Gamora, a role played by Zoe Saldana. Gunn said he has found a way for Gillian to play the role of the bald-headed Nebula without having to shave her hair off.
Gunn also discussed the rumor that "Guardians" lead male star Chris Pratt might be the next Indiana Jones. While Gunn said that would be very cool, he denied the reports, according to Variety.
Meanwhile, Variety commented that Gunn's use of Periscope as a method for celebrities to interact with fans "could become a popular way."
"Gunn's manner of using Periscope could become a popular way for filmmakers and celebrities to get information out and appear accessible to their fans. Compared to a Q&A on Twitter, Periscope makes it easier for more questions to be quickly answered and also allows the viewer to see how a person responds to each query," wrote Variety.
If Variety is right, fans may expect more tidbits on the upcoming Marvel sequel to be revealed through the new app, described as "Twitter meets Snapchat, only with video." The app allows the user to post a live-stream video while questions and reactions appear on the screen.
"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is scheduled to hit the big screen on May 5, 2017.
