Showtime has recently released the first trailer for their upcoming six-part miniseries "Guerrilla."

According to the miniseries' synopsis, "Guerrilla" tells a love story set against the backdrop of one of the most politically explosive times in UK history — the 1970s. Starring Freida Pinto and Babou Ceesay, it tells the story of two activists and lovers whose relationship and values are put to the test in their goal of liberating a political prisoner and initiating a radical underground cell.

The group's ultimate target is to bring down the Black Power Desk, a counter-intelligence unit formed by the British government around that time in order to quash any form of black activism by any means necessary. This leads to a series of violent clashes between the police force and the black community as they continue to aggressively fight for equal rights.

The original drama came from "12 Years A Slave" writer John Ridley. Actor Idris Elba, aside from playing a supporting role in the six-part limited series, will also be serving as the show's executive producer.

According to TV Guide, Ridley and his team, in developing the series' story, had to seek out certain individuals to verify information and events that happened at the time, including real law enforcement officials who served in those years.

However, during the Television Critics Association winter previews, Ridley stressed that the essential story at the heart of the TV miniseries is still the same.

"The differences between racism [in the United Kingdom] or here -- or frankly anywhere in the world -- when you get to down to the most fundamental level, there is no difference. When people are being marginalized or disenfranchised it really doesn't matter if it's about race or religion, creed or color," Ridley told reporters at the event.

"Guerilla" is scheduled to air in the United States on Sunday, April 16, at 9 p.m. ET/PT via Showtime. It arrives earlier in the UK, on April 13, via Sky Atlantic.
