'Harley Quinn' spin-off latest news: Margot Robbie to reunite with 'Suicide Squad' director in 'Gotham City Sirens'

There is going to be a Harley Quinn spin-off movie.

The mentally demented DC supervillain, portrayed by Margot Robbie, was the breakout character among the diverse ensemble of villainous heroes in the DC flick "Suicide Squad." And after the commercial success (and critical failure) of the film, rumors have run rampant concerning the possibility of a Harley Quinn spin-off. Now, it appears recent developments have turned these rumors into reality.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first media outlet to break the news that Robbie will be reprising her role as the DC villainess and that she will also be reuniting with "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer, who is now the confirmed director of the spin-off film.

Titled "Gotham City Sirens," the Harley Quinn-starred DC movie will also be villain-centric, but it will be focused on three female supervillains from the DC Comics universe. "Gotham City Sirens" is actually a recent DC title which focused on the villainous trio of Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy.

Top female action writer Geneva Robertson-Dworen, who has also penned scripts for the "Tomb Raider" reboot and "Sherlock Holmes 3," was tapped by Warner Bros. to write the spin-off's screenplay. DC film arm's bigwigs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg are also involved in the development of the movie as producers. Robbie, other than serving as the star of the film, will also be its executive producer.

Aside from "Gotham City Sirens," the studio will reportedly be working on the sequel to "Suicide Squad" despite the mostly negative reception of the first film. A Deadshot standalone film, with actor Will Smith reprising the starring role, is also in the works.

As of writing, including film efforts such as "Wonder Woman," "Justice League," and "Dark Universe," the DC Extended Universe film franchise has 12 movies set for the future.

Harley Quinn's spin-off film "Gotham City Sirens" has no official release date yet. But since the development of the movie is expected to be placed on the fast track, new details may be made available soon.
