Carrie Mathison will go on a mission in the Middle East on Season 4 of hit Showtime series "Homeland."

The newly promoted CIA officer, played by Claire Danes, will embark on an overseas mission set in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which will require her to leave her child.

The official synopsis for the season has been revealed, and it reads:

"Season four will find Carrie Mathison (Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe Award winner Claire Danes) assigned to one of the most volatile and dangerous CIA stations in the Middle East where she is back on the front lines in the war on terror."

Fans of the show have been highly anticipating the upcoming season, since the third season ended with Nicholas Brody being killed by public hanging. The finale also showed Carrie making a star on the memorial wall of Nicholas.

While Carrie has to go on the mission and at the same time face the full responsibility of being a mother, the character will face several challenges in Season 4. Reports say she will feel homesick, but at the same time, she will be inspired to see justice be done.

"It's about seeing Carrie Mathison for the first time doing the job she was trained to do — being a case officer in a foreign capital. We're going to see what an intelligence officer does on the ground. How she recruits assets, how she deals with the foreign government and her country team — the people she works with in the embassy — and the host country's intelligence services. That is a complicated and murky world, one that we hope is filled with intrigue and drama and adventure," show runner Alex Gansa said about the storyline of the upcoming season.

It seems that Carrie would not be alone, since reports say CIA operative and former gunman Peter Quinn will become part of Carrie's journey.

"Quinn is eager to get out of the [espionage] business and is recognizing behavior in Carrie that he himself has had in the past as an assassin, and he's concerned for her. So he trying to jar her into 'consciousness,' but she's reluctant to engage," Danes said in an interview.

Aside from Carrie and Quinn, the fourth season will feature the return of characters Saul Berenson, Darl Adal, Sen. Andrew Lockheart, and Fara Sherazi.

The fourth season of "Homeland" premieres on Oct. 5 at 9:00 pm ET/PT on the Showtime Network.
