The sixth season of political thriller television series "Homeland" has been moved back to a 2017 premiere, specifically a January time slot, as opposed to its usual fall airing.

Reports reveal that this move is to allow the show to accommodate the plot for the upcoming season, which is said to deal with the United States presidential elections well into the inauguration of the president and the transfer of power from the outgoing to the incoming president. What is even more thrilling for fans is the news that the show will have two more seasons after season 6.

"Homeland" season 6 will take place in the U.S. after the last two were internationally set. The main characters will be returning to the series, including Carrie Mathison, the FBI agent played by Claire Danes, Saul Berenson by Mandy Patinkin, as well as Dar Adal by F. Murray Abraham. It may be surprising to many fans, but Peter Quinn will be back as well, played by Rupert Friend.

During last season's finale, Quinn had been attached to life support at the hospital, and viewers saw Mathison moving as though to detach the machine. With the news of Quinn's return, fans are asking the inevitable question of what could have transpired at the hospital.

Danes reportedly did not know what was in store for Quinn, but they later filmed a different version. The next season may be dealing with the latter's recovery from his injuries, and as speculated, may find him and Mathison romantically linked.

Next season will find Mathison now working for an organization which assists Muslims residing in the U.S. She will be based in Brooklyn the timeline being several months after her stint in Berlin.

Showtime's chief executive officer, David Nevins, announced that executive producer Alex Gansa and Danes are both set for the upcoming season, as well as seasons 7 and 8.
