It isn't easy to continue being enamored with your gadget when it constantly dies out on you. It's just like being with a very unreliable lover—awful!

But there's good news! That sinking feeling that you get when your battery drains so quickly and makes your iPhone, iPad, or iPod seem like just an ordinary paperweight will soon be a thing of the past. Prolonging battery life can be done with a few tricks and tips.

First, make sure that you turn off any non-essential contents and background app updates. If you don't really need to get minute-by-minute weather updates, for example, turn off your weather app. Do this by going to Settings app > General > Background App Refresh, then choosing which app contents you don't need to refresh automatically or regularly.

Second, turn off GPS. If there's ever something like a cosmic blackhole sucking energy in your iOS 8, GPS would be it, hands-down. Finding your friends and navigating are important, so GPS is quite useful. But you can turn it off for apps in which location services aren't essential. Do this by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services, then turning off what's not critical for tracking.

Third, use these quick fixes: Go to Control Center, lower screen brightness and turn off Bluetooth when not in active use. Avoid using the keyboard clicks feature—it may be fun or cute, but it's also a drain. Ditch using the speaker and use headphones instead.

You should also turn off Push Notifications. Do this by going to Settings app > Notifications > then choosing the app you don't want to get alerts for, and turn it off.

With these tips and tricks, you can be more happy and less grouchy about your iOS 8 battery life.
